Collectable 1914 Issue

The Manners And Customs Of The Modern Egyptians
by Edward Williams Lane

Published by J M Dent of E P Dutton & Co
Edited and Introduced by Ernest Rhys - Everyman's Library

This book proved so popular it has never been out of print since it was first published in 1836.

This is a very old 1914 issue.  From the pictures you can tell it has been very well read.  The spine is quite ragged and the cover (dark green cloth) is a bit scuffed.  Otherwise, apart from the pages being slightly yellowed with age (the paper was not white to start with) it is completely intact.

Lane emmersed himself in Egyptian culture, learned the Arabic language and adopted the Arab way of life.  The book is recognised for its scope of detail of daily life on topics such as the nature of Islamic laws, birth and marriage customs, death and funeral rites, music and dancing, dress, education, religion, domestic life, industry, superstions, the bath, and the world of magic and alchemy.  This work is facinating and is one of the greatest  works of cultural anthropology.  Very well illustrated throughout - 630 pages in total. 7" x 4" - depth 1".
